What is an EAP?
An EAP (Employee Assistance Program) is a confidential counselling
and referral service available through your employer that can help
you, your household members, and dependants.
Who can use the EAP?
Employees, their spouse, household members, and dependents. Appointments
are face-to-face, via telephone or even email assistance is available
(though it is not as effective as face-to-face or phone counselling).
How do I schedule an appointment?
Appointments can be scheduled by calling Betterlife Directions's
Toll-free 1800 number from 8:30am - 5:30pm M-F
(EST). This number is reserved for employees and their families
of Betterlife Directions EAP clients, and can be found on the posters
at your workplace or on the wallet card you would have received
during your company's EAP induction. If you don't have this number
please call our head office on (07) 4124 4521 for more details.
Will I be charged for using the EAP?
No. Your employer is providing this benefit to you and your family
as a benefit. For help beyond the scope of the EAP you may be referred
to another resource and you would be responsible for fees resulting
from your use of services outside the EAP. We will help you find
a solution that fits your budget and issue. An EAP benefit is made
available to you at no charge because your employer wants you to
succeed both as an employee and in your personal life.
Is the EAP just for problems at work?
No. You can use the EAP to help you deal with personal concerns,
whether or not they have a direct impact on your work performance,
as well as for problems at work.
Should I use the EAP for crises only?
No. The EAP can help you sort through whatever is happening in your
life, big or small. Call if you simply need a new perspective, or
when you need help recognizing options and making informed choices.
It takes courage to confront and deal with a problem that may even
have been festering for many years.
What will my employer know about my counselling
visit?
Betterlife Directions's counsellors are bound by a professional
code of ethics. Betterlife Directions's standard reporting process
doesn’t report client names to your employer. The only information
your employer sees is the number of people and visits, gender, &
whether the visits were for personal, or financial reasons, or a
supervisory referral. More information about client confidentiality
is found in the Betterlife Directions EAP handbook.
Betterlife Directions's Employee Assistance Services are designed
to help employees work through issues such as depression, and return
them to their normal productive level.
