what is counselling?

Counsellors assist people to better understand themselves by explaining options, setting goals and helping them to take action by:

  • Helping the person being counselled to identify those issues, feelings and circumstances in his or her life which are causing, or contributing to, concern and unhappiness;
  • Providing the person being counselled with options and methods to manage and (where possible) resolve those issues or concerns;
  • Leading the person being counselled to cope or deal with those issues and their life circumstances in a more constructive and positive way.
  • Acting as facilitators in group sessions;
  • Working with other professionals such as medical practitioners, psychologists and social workers as part of a health management team;
  • Act as mediators in conflict.

Can the benefits of Counselling be "guaranteed"?

The answer is NO. Counselling is an interactive process which relies heavily on the person being counselled (for example, his or her responses and openness, the particular issues, etc). No counsellor can guarantee that counselling will meet the expectations of the person being counselled.

Many people experience positive and constructive outcomes from a counselling process, but not everybody does. Because we are all unique human beings and all have different perceptions and expectations of what we are looking for, the outcomes of counselling can vary as widely as the individual expectations of those who seek counselling.

This means that Betterlife Directions cannot promise any particular outcome, benefit or result from the counselling process but we will work with you to achieve the best result for you.

Getting the best out of counselling.

To get the best out of the counselling process the following guidelines are useful:

  • Aim to attend every scheduled session
  • Be prepared to share your thoughts and feelings openly with the counsellor
  • Complete any "homework" tasks set by the counsellor
  • When unsure ask for clarification about any counselling activities being undertaken
  • Discuss any doubts or concerns you have with your counsellor.

Can my Counsellor help with all matters?

Ethically, as a professional, your Betterlife Directions Counsellor will not attempt to assist you in areas beyond his/her expertise. In such cses your Counsellor will, if appropriate, refer you to another professional with the relevant skills (eg an Betterlife Directions Psychologist, or your G.P.)

do I need a referral?

No referral is necessary. Your doctor, any other health professional or a friend may suggest and/or refer you for counselling but it is not necessary as self referral is very common.
